Change Change Change

Hi Furries!

Well I made my own leap recently and got a new job! Notified my current employer and training people to take over for me. In less than two weeks, I’ll be working in a new industry (for me). Recent post from me was avoiding Burning Bridges! So now I’m trying to make this transition as smooth as possible. They appreciate it because there’s a lot on the line if things would stop. So I’m still doing my best with less than 2 weeks to go.

I’m excited for this new job but there’s a nagging feeling at the back of my mind. Am I going to actually enjoy this new job? It’s probably really different from things I’ve done before. I know the job and I know the people I’m leaving. It’s one of those “the devil you know vs the devil you don’t” situations. I have no idea how the new situation will be and yet I know how bad the current situation is. Will the new one be worse, better? It’s hard to change! You can actually get comfortable being unhappy when you’re not sure if things will get better by taking the leap. Writing this blog and working on myself for the past almost-year now has led me to the following: Changing a lousy situation is always better than staying in the same place.

So what drove me to make this change? I knew I wasn’t pleased with my current job. After almost 5 years there, I was busted back to doing the same job I did when I was first hired. Granted the pay was better (I had been promoted twice), but this job was becoming stagnant. On top of that, I had survived 4 mass layoffs at this job and every time, the CEO or management comes out and says “This is a good thing. We’re getting more focused. You’re all safe.” After so many rounds of that, there’s a reduced sense of security. So maybe I’ll get cut eventually. So I wasn’t developing professionally and I didn’t see the place improving. Does that justify switching to a new industry and employer? Well it’s time to weigh the option to decide if change is right.

I don’t know the people I’ll be working with. They could be cool or way worse. What about the environment? It won’t be as pristine as the lab I used to run and the instrumentation might not be as fancy. Maybe not but there’s definitely a certain instrument there that is new to me and I would love to get experience with. What about money? Well it’s the same for the moment but in 6 months I’m guaranteed a significant raise so yeah the money will be better too. Commuting distance ? Well it’ll definitely be shorter and I will avoid freeways now so that could mean a lot more free time to do things! Advancement? Well it looks like maybe 2 years to become an official manager. I’ve been a mentor for years already and was recently passed over as a manager for somebody who already had official experience at my current job. I don’t see any changes coming within the next 2 years that would allow me to become a manager so I guess it’s better to change. Can I take the experience elsewhere? Yes. I’m going to be working in a place that is part of infrastructure and will allow me to move wherever I want! That’s awfully nice for somebody, like me, who plans to leave SoCal someday.

So I came to the decision that change is needed. I’m anxious, sure. I don’t feel great about it. I’m finding myself needing to do a little more meditation more often. It’s definitely uncomfortable but that’s how you move on to bigger and better things. It’s not incredibly different from changing my diet to improve my health or working out more or reading more books. I hope you can find something to improve in your own life. Pick one thing at a time and make the changes you know you need!

Wednesday Tailtip: How I get dressed

Hello Fuzzbutts!

For this week’s tip, I thought I’d share the simple way I get dressed and keep my life simple every day.

In my closet, I separate the casual shirts from dressy (work) shirts. When I’m getting dressed for work, I grab the work shirt farthest on my left on the rack. That’s it! If I don’t want to wear that shirt, I put it back and grab the next one. The next day, if I still don’t want to wear that shirt, I realize that shirt just isn’t a good shirt for me and toss it in a bag to donate to the local Goodwill. After doing this for a few weeks (I had a lot of dress shirts after years of receiving them from family as gifts for Christmas and birthdays, etc) I now have a rack of shirts that I enjoy and don’t have to think about when it comes to putting them on. Casual shirts I treat the same way to narrow down what shirts I like vs those I don’t. Any shirts that go onto the rack (laundry day) go furthest to the right so I’m always circulating them.

I keep few pairs of pants so decisions aren’t really needed. I keep blue jeans and black work pants so it’s not like there’s a lot of variety for me to bother with. I wear the same pair each week unless I notice a spot on them. I also pay attention to how well they fit to decide if I need to dump them.

I know some of you fuzzbutts work out of the home and STILL have to take time to decide what you want to wear for the day so I hope this helps!

Wednesday Tailtip: Meal Prep!

Hey Fuzzbutts!

Got another tailtip for you this week. If you work a regular job, picking your lunch every day can get annoying and difficult if you can’t decide what you want or don’t have leftovers. Rather than drain your brain, cook up enough food on Sunday to last you until Friday for lunch!

There’s only a couple of requirements. Whatever you cook still needs to be edible on Friday. Also, you need to cook enough that you’re not starving at work! It will take a little testing and adjusting to figure out how much you eat but once you figure it out on a regular basis, then you’re all set!

As a general health tip, try to adjust your mindset when it comes to food. Treat food only as fuel and nutrition. It’s great to have tasty awesome food sometimes but sometimes you get bored if you eat the same thing all week. Accept the fact that food is fuel and getting bored isn’t an issue as long as you understand you’re eating for survival. Hopefully, you’ll also eat healthier!

Stop Decision Fatigue: Make your Life Simple

Let’s talk about decision fatigue again. The gist of it is that as the day goes on, we make a bunch of decisions across a wide range of things. Unfortunately, it turns out we only have so much brainpower to dedicate for making these decisions. This makes it tough to decide what to have for dinner or what you actually want to do when you have some time after work/school! The process of decision-making applies from simpler things like what you’re going to wear that day, what breakfast you’ll eat, to more complex stuff like weighing the pros and cons of how to prioritize the tasks you have to get done for the day’s work. By the end of the day, when you finally have time to do the things that are important, you’re spent! Big or little, all decision draw from the same pool. So how can we preserve our little reservoir of brainpower?

Give yourself less decisions to make.

What does that mean? It means choosing to give yourself less decisions. How can we do this? Standardizing your life.

“But how?” you’re asking. Don’t worry little fuzzbutt. I have some examples I use in my own life.

I meal prep my lunches for the week. I don’t have to spend any time during the week deciding what I want to eat at work tomorrow because the decision was made and only needed to be made once.

I have a morning routine before work. I get up, use the bathroom, get dressed for work (same pants, grab the shirt furthest on the left on the rack), make the same breakfast, brush my teeth, comb my hair, grab my lunch and go. If I somehow end up with any spare time in the morning, I fool around on my PC to ease into the day.

At work, I go through another routine. I check my email and drink coffee at my desk. If there’s samples to prepare, then I do that first. Then I see if there’s any data to go over. Once that’s done, I go over my to-do list and then goals. This is continuously interrupted by new emails, meetings, and people wanting a face-to-face chat about something or other. Still, the skeleton of my work day is kept intact and it’s automatic.

No. I’m not saying to be a robot.

What I’m saying is that we have to remove unnecessary decisions from our lives and just make things easier on ourselves to keep us sane and productive. We usually can’t avoid decisions at school and work but we can do our best at home which leaves us free to pursue interests with clear heads. I have my morning routine during the week but that usually goes out the window on weekends since there’s no big responsibilities to burn me out.

On top of saving your brain, expect to save time!

Wuffles Pro Tip: If you’re really lazy, break the banana in half and lay it onto the bread. Bites will be terribly inconsistent but you get all the nutrients and you can enjoy being lazy.
